On 11 October, it was one year since His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and His Majesty Philippe, King of the Belgians, officially opened the New Lock in Terneuzen. The next phase is now approaching: trial operations with 38-metre-wide commercial vessels on the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal.
North Sea Port is preparing for the construction of a new, forward-looking head office right on the Dutch-Belgian border. With a landmark building in Sas van Gent and Zelzate, the port authority aims to bring all its employees together under one roof and strengthen its role as a decisive port authority.
Belgian rail operator Lineas has been awarded the first rail zone in North Sea Port following a tender procedure. This allocation marks an important step towards more efficient and sustainable freight transport by rail in the Ghent section of the port.
Vlaeynatie, located in the North Sea Port area, is celebrating a triple milestone. Not only are three new warehouses being officially opened, the company is also marking its 180th anniversary and 10 years of presence at the Axelse Vlakte.
At the Mercator rail yard in Ghent, freight trains can now make use of six refurbished, long tracks each measuring 750 metres. With this, North Sea Port strengthens its position on the European rail map. The Mercator Yard is the second most important rail infrastructure site managed by Infrabel in the Ghent area.
On 1 August 2025, the New Lock in Terneuzen officially became fully operational. This milestone significantly increases the capacity of the North Sea Lock complex, granting larger sea-going vessels smoother access to North Sea Port and the European hinterland.
In the second half of August, work will start on the construction of a new green park in Rieme (Evergem). These works in North Sea Port should be completed by the summer of 2026.
On 18 August, a new section of cycle highway opened at the Moervaart-North junction along the R4 East in Ghent. This new stretch offers cyclists a safer, more comfortable and faster route along the R4.
Many employees cycle to work in the port area. A new cycle tunnel connects the cycle path around the Kluizendok with the companies operating there. This makes commuting by bicycle in the port a lot safer and smoother.
Vlaeynatie, gelegen in het havengebied van North Sea Port, blijft investeren in de toekomst met de opening van drie nieuwe magazijnen. Deze uitbreiding met 30.000m² extra opslag- en verwerkingscapaciteit versterkt Vlaeynatie als logistieke partner en van de haven als logistieke draaischijf.
The port authority is calling on the government to take strategic port developments that contribute to economic and social challenges into account when considering locations for nuclear power plants. North Sea Port therefore considers the Mosselbanken and Thermphos sites to be unrealistic.
On 8 May, the inland vessel ‘Marlea’ will pass through the New Lock in Terneuzen. The passage of the Marlea is the first in a series of trial runs that will be carried out in the coming weeks. This marks another important milestone for this enormous construction project in North Sea Port.
