Sailing toward net zero in 2050

As a true energy port, we’re leading in the import, production, use and distribution of energy. We too are working towards net zero by 2050. That means reducing CO₂ across all processes, transport flows and industries. A challenge? Yes. But it energises us! We’re embracing multi-fuels, investing in renewables, and creating space for smart digital solutions.

Numbers with a buzz

600 k tonnes of hydrogen production and use per year.
500 hectares for energy transition and climate projects.
6 gw on- and offshore wind energy.
1 million tonnes CO₂ reduced per year by 2030.
50 million, that’s how much we invest in infrastructure for CO₂ capture, use and storage.
80 + offshore wind projects realised from our port.

We power Europe

As the most western entry point to Northwest Europe, we’re perfectly connected to European industry clusters and ports by rail, (inland) shipping, road and pipelines. A rare catch! Close to supply and demand — the perfect port for sustainable growth.

Anchor point for European energy

Our energetic port is perfectly placed on both the North Sea and the Western Scheldt, with multimodal access by rail, water, road and even cross-border pipelines!

Comprehensive energy infrastructure

Thanks to deep-sea facilities and ample room for import, production, storage and transit, we fuel local and European industry with energy and feedstock.

Limitless possibilities

Borders? Not on our radar! We’re connected to both Dutch & Belgian grids and flexibly share hydrogen, CO₂, residual heat and energy wherever demand is highest.

Room for renewal

We still have space. Through smart co-siting, innovation and close cooperation with companies and knowledge institutions, we accelerate sustainable progress.

Energy & transition

As a true energy port, we host a wide range of energy industries. And each one of them is navigating the shift to net zero by 2050. Because only together can we move forward.

  • A sustainable future demands electrification. In partnership, we’ve completed 80+ offshore wind projects, and solar panels feed power into the grid — enough for over 200K households. Battery projects (670 MW) in the port help keep the grid stable.

  • We’re Europe’s #1 hydrogen cluster — already producing and using 600,000 tonnes of hydrogen. And we’re scaling up production and import capacity — up to 7 million tonnes by 2035. For local use and distribution to the European hinterland.

  • To lower CO₂, we invest in Carbon Capture & Storage/Utilisation — CC(S)U — projects and the repurposing of residual flows. Co-siting, heat exchange and smart cross-border connections enable circular energy and reduce emissions.

  • We’re the largest biofuel cluster in Western Europe. Here, industrial players, start-ups and leading knowledge institutions work on innovative, bio-based fuels and materials — from lab to industrial scale.

  • We cast a wide net when it comes to multi-fuels — biogas, bio-LNG, methanol, HVO, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs). It’s how we’ll make shipping, road transport and industrial processes more sustainable. For mobility especially, multi-fuels are the way.

From footprint to green sprint

Our port still largely runs on fossil fuels — for now. The course is clear: greener transport, cleaner processes and more sustainable trade.

Our multi-fuel strategy

We’re investing in a broad mix of fuels — from LNG to methanol. That’s how we’ll steer transport and industry toward greener horizons. Quayside, we already provide green shore power.

Sustainable trade

We’re accelerating the transition through import, export and storage. We facilitate the production and trade of SAFs, bio-LNG and other alternative fuels.

Multi-purpose molecules

Molecules like ammonia and methanol are versatile: fuel, feedstock and hydrogen carrier. A perfect match for our smart and flexible energy vision.

Energy infrastructure + logistics

The energy transition demands a strong backbone. You can’t build that in a day, but we’re fully committed to logistics, connectivity and smart networks.

  • Electricity is essential for making things more sustainable. From reinforcing the grid to shore power at the quay — we do it all, and more every day. Recently, we invested in a new river cruise jetty with four green power hookups.

  • Hydrogen carriers arrive here by sea. We provide safe tank storage, cracking and distribution via pipeline, rail and water. Thanks to the H₂ backbone, we deliver directly to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France.

  • In our port, companies work on CCUS technologies. We also exchange heat and electricity where possible via point-to-point connections. As a true connector, we match partners and infrastructure for smart, circular solutions.

  • We have big ambitions for a digital platform where supply and demand come together. An energy marketplace. Data sharing, portal access, and smart grid management systems help distribute power and molecules more evenly.

Charting new waters in CO₂ storage

Yara Sluiskil leads the way: every year, 800k tonnes of CO₂ set sail from North Sea Port to Northern Lights project — an empty gas field off the coast of Øygarden, Norway. A flagship for Europe’s cross-border climate action. And they’re not alone — other companies in our port are stepping up too.
