1 destination, 2 transitions

Reaching a climate-neutral 2050 means navigating two key currents: energy and feedstock. It’s how we make our port resilient and future-ready.

From fossils to renewables

To green the industry in our port, we’re switching to renewable and recycled resources—while capturing and reusing CO₂ along the way (CCUS).

Streamlining resources, powering industry

By tapping into residual flows and forging industrial symbiosis, we cut back on primary raw materials—and anchor our strategic strength.

Numbers that make waves

2050 the year we want to be both climate-neutral and fully circular as a port.
4 million residents provide sludge from which project FOSTER recovers energy & nutrients.
10 new innovative circular projects have come to life in the past five years.
150 hectares reserved for circular clusters and new initiatives.
6 value chains are at the heart of our circular economic transition.
3 million tonnes of scrap handled by our terminals every year!

Space for circular growth

We’re making room for the future. Around five circular valleys, we’re creating space for pioneers shaping a climate-neutral, circular industry. Discover the hotspots here.

  • Green hydrogen. Biorefining. Chemical recycling. Vlissingen offers ample space for energy projects that combine circular thinking with renewable fuels and CO₂ reduction.

  • This is where initiatives in CO₂ storage and reuse, and circular chemistry, are thriving. Think Alta Carbon and cutting-edge technologies like chemical recycling, which turns residual flows into sustainable raw materials.

  • Here, SFP transforms agricultural residual flows into green gas for households. Nearby greenhouse horticulture focuses on smart reuse of residual heat and CO₂ exchange.

  • ArcelorMittal is developing the North-C Circular Cluster here, with circular carbon at its core. Rodenhuize offers the ideal infrastructure for collaboration on CO₂ reuse and industrial synergies.

  • This area is already buzzing with circular activity. From bio-LNG to chemical plastic recycling and smart symbioses where companies use each other’s residual heat and flows to create a closed, circular chain.

“We encourage the development of circular value chains in which the value of raw materials and resources is preserved as much as possible. As a port, we have excellent access to feedstock of tomorrow.”

Circular? It’s a joint effort.

Circularity only works through collaboration. We connect companies, knowledge and governments, and provide infrastructure, space, logistics, and a prime location. The circular puzzle fits right here.

  • We’re a true connector—between companies (including with each other), governments, knowledge institutions, and the local community. We actively stimulate and facilitate alliances, projects and innovations that accelerate the circular transition.

  • We provide the right, tailor-made infrastructure and logistics to keep circular industry moving. From CCUS to water loop closure and plastic recycling—specialist crews are charting smarter routes across all six value chains. We’re getting it done.

  • We are multimodally accessible, with deep-sea access and strong hinterland connections. Anchored near knowledge centres, fluent in international rules, and plugged into renewable energy and hydrogen—this is where it’s happening.

Our circular value chains

We have six strong circular value chains. Companies looking to innovate, collaborate and accelerate are docking here—for good reason. We offer the space, the connections, and a strong tailwind for sustainable growth. Discover all six chains!

Plastics

We’re steering the plastics chain toward sustainability—through chemical recycling and close-knit industry alliances. That’s how we close the loop on plastics.

Steel and scrap

From pans to panels—steel is everywhere. In our port, we’re flipping the script with scrap, electrification, green hydrogen, and CCUS.

Building materials

Here in the port, companies are reshaping construction flows—closing loops through reuse, clever recycling and fresh alliances across the building sector.

Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU)

We breathe life back into CO₂. We capture, store, and reuse it —turning CO₂ into a raw material. That’s how we’re preparing today for tomorrow.

Water

Smart water management is key. By purifying, reusing and sharing water flows between companies, we’re closing the loop. Circular, innovative, and ready for the future.

Biobased

Our biobased cluster, with a dedicated pilot plant, is full steam ahead. Companies here team up to fuel growth, spark innovation and chart new applications.
