Opening of a new cycle highway section

On 18 August, a new section of cycle highway opened at the Moervaart-North junction along the R4 East in Ghent. This provides cyclists with a safer, more comfortable and faster connection along the R4.

The R4 ring road around the Ghent section of North Sea Port is being redeveloped in many places to improve both traffic flow and safety. Cycle highways are an integral part of this project.

Moervaart-North junction

Moervaart-North is one of the new junctions. Here, an oval roundabout is being built over the R4, acting as a link between the R4 on the right bank of the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal and the local roads. A dedicated cycle tunnel will run alongside the roundabout, keeping cyclists fully separated from car traffic. The cycle highway also connects to the adjoining streets, allowing cyclists easy access on and off the route.

A project for cyclists

It is no coincidence that the cycling infrastructure at Moervaart-North is the first to be completed. Within the planning, the R4WO project prioritises cyclists. Before major roadworks begin, safe alternatives for cyclists are put in place.

The new cycle link at Moervaart-North is part of a wider network of high-quality cycling infrastructure that is being developed step by step along the R4. This is one of the core ambitions of the R4WO project.

The R4WO project

The R4WO project (R4 West and East) involves large-scale infrastructure works along the R4 ring road around Ghent. Its goal is to improve road safety, traffic flow and quality of life for all users. Since spring 2024, De Werkvennootschap and the contractor consortium BRAVO4 have been carrying out preparatory works, with the first results now becoming visible. A key part of the project is the development of comfortable and safe cycling infrastructure, enabling smoother connections between cycle routes, commuter traffic and major regional axes.

55 kilometres of new cycle paths

The R4WO project will deliver no less than 25 kilometres of new cycle highways along the R4.

These will be in addition to the 13 kilometres of cycle paths that North Sea Port will build over the next five years in the Flemish part of the port area. On the Zeeland side, a further 17 kilometres are planned. Altogether, this will add up to 30 kilometres of new cycle paths, with which North Sea Port aims to further strengthen cycling safety in the port area: North Sea Port versterkt fietsveiligheid in havengebied met 30 kilometer nieuwe fietspaden - North Sea Port
