From early April, the Flanders Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) will be carrying out work on the approaches to the Zelzate Tunnel. The work will be carried out at night and at weekends wherever possible to minimise disruption. This will, of course, affect traffic to and from the North Sea Port area.
The tunnel approach roads are in very poor condition due to the impact of groundwater on the road surface and the tunnel joints. To remedy this, the agency will carry out a number of interventions.
Marshland
The Zelzate Tunnel is located in marshland, which means the tunnel infrastructure is subject to water pressure and groundwater seepage. This causes the road surface to be pushed upwards, accelerates its deterioration and allows water to seep between the joints. To remedy this, AWV is carrying out a number of interventions.
Injection and resurfacing
Three types of works are planned on the approach roads to the Zelzate Tunnel.
First, grouting work to combat moisture will be carried out. This involves 330 boreholes, each 2 metres deep. This will help prevent the deterioration of the road surface. Next, the road surface of the approach ramps will be completely replaced. Finally, new joints will be installed between the concrete road surface of the tunnel and the asphalt surfacing of the access ramps.
The works will be carried out in several phases.
Three weeks of night-time closures
The grouting will take place from Tuesday 7 April to Thursday 23 April. This work will be carried out at night (between 9 pm and 5 am) to minimise disruption. During the works, the tunnel tube where work is taking place will be closed each time:
- From Tuesday 7 April (the night of Tuesday to Wednesday) up to and including Saturday 11 April (the night of Saturday to Sunday), work will be carried out in the tunnel tube heading towards Knokke.
- From Wednesday 15 April (the night of Wednesday to Thursday) up to and including Tuesday 21 April (the night of Tuesday to Wednesday), work will be carried out in the tunnel tube heading towards Antwerp.
- On the nights of Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 April, both tunnel tubes will be closed for routine maintenance work.
- On the night of Wednesday 22 April, work will continue for one further night in the tube heading towards Knokke.
- The night of Thursday 23 April is a reserve night. If the work is not yet complete, the tunnel will therefore be closed in both directions once again.
Closed in both directions for two weekends
From 9 pm on Friday 24 April until 5 am on Monday 27 April, the Zelzate Tunnel will be closed in both directions. During this weekend, resurfacing work will be carried out on all access roads.
From 9 pm on Friday 8 May until 5 am on Monday 11 May, the Zelzate Tunnel will be closed in both directions to replace the expansion joints.
Traffic diverted
During the closures, local traffic will be diverted via the R4 and the Zelzate Bridge.
AWV strongly advises long-distance traffic to avoid the area and use the E17 and E40.
