In April 2026, Rijkswaterstaat will carry out major maintenance work on the Vlaketunnel (A58) near Kapelle. To ensure this work is carried out safely and efficiently, the tunnel will be completely closed for ten days and nights. This will, of course, have a significant impact on access to our port, particularly Vlissingen.
The maintenance work on the Vlaketunnel comprises several tasks. Work will be carried out in both tunnel tubes simultaneously to ensure the closure lasts as short a time as possible. The asphalt, expansion joints, detection loops, gully grates and crash barriers will be replaced, and joints and concrete along the walls will be repaired. Once the work is complete, all systems will be tested before the tunnel reopens safely.
Through this work, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) is strengthening the infrastructure and road safety, ensuring that the link between Zeeland and the rest of the Netherlands, as well as Belgium, remains reliable in the future.
The Vlaketunnel will be closed from 9 pm on Thursday 9 April until 5 am on Monday 20 April. The closure will cause significant traffic disruption and extra journey times, which could exceed 60 minutes during rush hour.
Smart travel helps minimise disruption
RWS is asking road users to travel smartly. Traffic will be diverted early, but please consider whether your journey is essential; work from home if possible, travel outside rush hour or choose alternative transport. By making conscious choices together, we can minimise disruption and ensure Zeeland remains accessible. More info
