New green park in Rieme

In the second half of August, work will start on the construction of a new green park in Rieme (Evergem). These works in North Sea Port should be completed by the summer of 2026. With these works, the Flemish Land Agency (VLM) aims to create a contemporary recreational park that will serve as a buffer for port activities.

Buffering, sports and play

The former 5.4-hectare industrial site will be transformed into a contemporary recreational park with a buffering function. The goal is to improve the quality of life in the port village of Rieme.

The works include earthmoving for the construction of a hill to buffer the Havenweg, the planting of 1.6 hectares of new forest, two welcoming zones, a canal viewpoint, walking paths, a mountain bike trail, an amphitheatre, a dog off-leash area, and various sports and play facilities. Existing trees and valuable vegetation will be preserved as much as possible. However, at the start of the works, some trees will need to be removed to allow for the construction of the hill and paths.

The new park will complete the chain of green buffer areas around the village centre of Rieme. The VLM has already developed the buffer areas Rieme-South, Doornzele-North | Flemish Land Agency, and Rieme-North | Flemish Land Agency.

“With the new park in Rieme, we are investing in more than just green space: we are creating a place where residents, employees and visitors can meet, relax and enjoy nature. It will be a modern, versatile space with room for sports, play and relaxation, while also buffering noise and traffic. By working together with local authorities, companies and partners, we are transforming a former industrial site into a green lung that strengthens Rieme’s liveability and breathes new life into the bond between the village and the port.”

Partnership

The works are funded by the Flemish government (Department of Mobility and Public Works – Maritime Access Division and land development subsidies), the City of Ghent, the Municipality of Evergem, North Sea Port and TotalEnergies. More information can be found at www.vlm.be/RiemeOost.
