New step in the fight against crime

Three kilometres of “smart” fencing is the first result of a series of physical security measures implemented by the “Stichting Veilige Zeehavens Zeeland” (Zeeland Safe Seaports Foundation). This foundation works together with government agencies, businesses and security services to make the port more resilient to crime, such as drug smuggling.

On Thursday, 26 September, a new step was taken in the fight against crime in Vlissingen. Mayor Bas van den Tillaar unveiled an information board on the new fence between Westhofhaven and Engelandweg. This small gesture is an important step in securing the North Sea Port harbour area. In the future, the physical fence will be expanded with a closed network of cameras.

Smart security: physical and virtual

The new fence does not seal off the port completely. An important function is that it distinguishes the public space from the port area. The information board and the fence clearly indicate where the public area ends and where the port area begins. This makes it possible to exclude people who are in the port area without good reason and to tackle criminal activities.

Enforcement agencies, such as the police and customs, can therefore take stricter action against individuals with malicious intentions. This makes it easier to enforce area bans, for example. This makes the port area safer without disrupting legal activities and logistical processes.

A safe harbour for employees and companies

Mayor van den Tillaar emphasised the great importance of the small sign during the unveiling: "We are making it increasingly difficult for criminals. The port is not only an economic driver for the region, but also an important workplace for thousands of employees. This fencing is important in ensuring their safety and protecting the companies that operate here. Criminals are increasingly trying to misuse ports for their illegal activities, and with these measures we are reducing those opportunities."

Expansion of camera surveillance

The fencing is the first result of a package of security measures that will be rolled out in the coming years. Camera surveillance will be expanded. In 2025, ANPR cameras will also be installed at all access roads to the port. These cameras recognise number plates and register who enters the port.
