First marine vessel in New Lock

On Friday 11 October, the bulk carrier “Bregaglia” was the first mega ship to use the New Lock in Terneuzen. The ship left the new sea lock after King Willem Alexander and King Filip jointly performed the official opening ceremony.

The bulk carrier, sailing under the Swiss flag, had ArcelorMittal in Ghent as its final destination. The “Bregaglia” is 240 metres long, 38 metres wide and has a draught of 11 metres. The ship will not only go down in history as the first seagoing vessel to use the New Lock, but also as the largest ship to date on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal.

With the New Lock, North Sea Port will gain a second, larger sea lock. The lock is suitable for mega ships with a width of 49 metres, a length of 366 metres and a draught of 14.5 metres. The New Lock will provide better access and faster traffic flow for shipping from the Westerschelde to the Canal from Ghent to Terneuzen and beyond. The capacity of the North Sea locks will also increase: more ships will be able to pass through the three locks at the same time, reducing waiting times for seagoing and inland vessels.

The bulk carrier “Bregaglia” transports iron ore for ArcelorMittal, which is based in the Ghent part of North Sea Port. ArcelorMittal is one of the largest steel companies in the world. The company has branches in sixty countries and production sites in sixteen countries. The company has been producing steel in Ghent since 1968.

During the opening ceremony, the ship Primula Seaways was moored in the Westsluis lock. This ship belongs to the Danish shipping company DFDS. Together with two other DFDS roll-on/roll-off ships, the Primula Seaways sails six days a week between Ghent and Gothenburg. This amounts to more than 300 ship movements per year. DFDS ships transport cargo for the Volvo Car factories in Gothenburg and Ghent, as well as products for other companies.
