EUTRACO accelerates green logistics in North Sea Port with electric trucks and multimodal infrastructure

By early 2026, no less than one third of EUTRACO’s heavy-duty truck fleet will be fully electric – a total of 54 e-trucks from Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. This investment highlights the company’s ambition to future-proof its services and operate in a climate-conscious way, fully aligned with the broader shift towards sustainable logistics within the North Sea Port area. 

The electrification is part of EUTRACO’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, which focuses on emission reduction, customer convenience, and lowering scope 3 emissions across the logistics value chain. As early as 2024, EUTRACO launched its first electric shuttle service – short, frequent routes powered entirely by 100% renewable energy. This is a scalable and realistic transport model for Belgium, where many journeys consist of shorter distances. 

EUTRACO is actively building an integrated logistics ecosystem where road and water transport are seamlessly connected. Its hubs in Willebroek, Evergem, and Calais are all strategically located for multimodal operations, enabling efficient and environmentally friendly movement of goods. 

In the context of the COSCO e-trucking project, EUTRACO and COSCO are joining forces to deliver a sustainable, multimodal logistics chain for a major player in the automotive sector. COSCO handles the import of vehicle parts from the Far East to the Port of Ghent, where the cargo arrives by inland vessel. From there, EUTRACO ensures fully electric transportation from the Inland Terminal in Kluizendok to the warehouse in Evergem. 

This approach significantly reduces the carbon footprint of these goods. In addition, EUTRACO’s in-house customs department ensures a smooth and efficient handling of all customs formalities.

EUTRACO combines fleet electrification with intelligent energy solutions and digital tools to minimise its ecological impact. Key enablers include: 

• Advanced Energy Management System (EMS) that manages battery storage and optimises the use of solar energy 
• Over 70% self-consumption through in-house solar power – supplying the e-truck fleet and powering CO2-neutral warehouses
• New logistics sites built to BREEAM standards, the internationally recognised benchmark for sustainable construction 

In addition, EUTRACO will soon launch a proprietary CO2 calculator, developed in collaboration with the University of Antwerp. This digital tool offers valuable insights into emissions related to transport and logistics activities, enables the measurement of scope 3 emissions, and provides a clear foundation for making more sustainable choices across the supply chain. 

With these smart innovations, EUTRACO not only offers greener logistics, but also provides its clients with insight, control, and measurable impact. 

Through this ambitious plan, EUTRACO makes a tangible contribution to the greening of transport and logistics within the North Sea Port area. Its focus on multimodality, electrification, and digital sustainability tools fits perfectly within North Sea Port’s vision: to grow as a forward-looking, circular, and climate-resilient top region for logistics and industry in Europe.
